From a project dedicated to Renewable Energy Communities to an international AI-powered platform tackling energy poverty
Great news for Federesco ETS and for the future of Renewable Energy Communities.
Out of more than 2,600 applications from around the world, Google.org has selected just 15 projects as part of the Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Government Innovation.
Among them is SUN4U 2.0 – Energy for All, a project submitted by ICLEI Europe and coordinated by Federesco ETS, taking the journey that began with SUN4U to a new international level and accelerating the creation and development of Renewable Energy Communities (RECs).
This new phase of the project has a clear objective: putting artificial intelligence at the service of the energy transition and the most vulnerable people.
SUN4U 2.0 will use AI tools to analyse energy consumption, identify situations of greater vulnerability, assess the solar potential of buildings and help identify the most effective solutions for supporting the creation of new Renewable Energy Communities.
The goal is not simply to generate more renewable energy, but to ensure that the benefits of the energy transition are accessible to everyone, including households currently experiencing energy hardship.
The original project, launched in 2023, developed a free digital platform designed to support citizens, businesses and public authorities in establishing or joining a REC. The platform provides tools to assess photovoltaic potential, simulate energy configurations, aggregate users, identify financing solutions, and connect with suppliers and technical expertise.
With SUN4U 2.0, this foundation is being brought into a new generation of digital tools.
Artificial intelligence will become a central component in making it easier to identify energy vulnerabilities and guide communities towards the opportunities offered by shared renewable energy.
International recognition
Being selected as one of just 15 projects worldwide represents an important recognition for Federesco ETS and for the work developed over the years in the field of Renewable Energy Communities.
The SUN4U 2.0 project will be developed over three years. Some of the activities will also involve Environment Park, ANCI Lazio, ANEA Napoli, CITERA Sapienza, LegaCoop and Sistematica S.p.A., project partners whose involvement will support the deployment and testing of the model in Piedmont.
The project is now entering its operational phase.
These days, the project’s international partners are meeting in the United States to kick-start the work with the Google team and define the development of the platform and the integration of its new artificial intelligence capabilities.
A new challenge: Energy for All
SUN4U 2.0 – Energy for All is built on a simple belief:
The energy transition must leave no one behind.
Renewable Energy Communities can become a concrete tool for generating renewable energy, reducing costs, strengthening local communities and tackling energy poverty.
With SUN4U 2.0, we want to take this one step further: using artificial intelligence to make this model efficient, more inclusive and more scalable.
SUN4U 2.0 is Energy for All.
